Oyo Communal Clash Claims 2 Lives, Police Vehicle

No fewer than two young men were killed in a communal clash between the residents of Ago-Are and Tede areas of Oyo State, SaharaReporters learnt on Sunday.

An eyewitness told SaharaReporters that the clash started on Friday and went on till Sunday.

A resident of Tede, who simply identified himself as Sola, told SaharaReporters in Ibadan on Sunday that the clash had to do with a cow market that was relocated from Tede to Ago-Are.

The source said following the development, a police vehicle and the office of the Western Nigeria Security Network, also known as Amotekun, were set ablaze.

"As we speak, the communities are on fire. Two people were killed while an Amotekun office was set ablaze. Though it has nothing to do with Fulani, this is worrisome," he said.

Meanwhile, the new Commissioner of Police in the state, Ngozi Onadeko, who led the Nigerian government delegation to Igangan, where the house of Seriki Fulani of Oyo State, was burnt on Friday, said normalcy would return to the affected communities. Saharareporters

Oyo to partner Korea on education as Gov Makinde pledges digitisation of system

Oyo State Governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, has said his administration remains committed to digitisation of the state’s educational system with a view to enhancing quality teaching and learning.
A statement issued yesterday in Ibadan by his Chief Press Secretary (CPS), Taiwo Adisa, quoted the governor as saying his administration was ready to partner with Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) on quality education service delivery.

Makinde stated this when he received a delegation of KOICA and the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) led by the KOICA Country Director, Woochan Chang, at Government House, Ibadan.

The statement added that the KOICA delegation was in Ibadan to inspect construction of a Smart (Model) School Project being constructed by UBEC at Sogunro Village on the Moniya-Oyo Road in Akinyele Council of the state.

While welcoming the delegation, Governor Makinde explained that as part of his administration’s determination to improve the standard of education in the state, the government appropriated 21 for 22 per cent for education in the 2021 budget.

The governor, who maintained that the on-going construction work on the Smart (Model) School project in Ibadan will be ready for commissioning in the next eight to 10 weeks, said his administration has always put its money where its mouth was.

Earlier, Chang said the agency was partnering with UBEC on the provision of multi-media equipment and facilities in the model school.

“We are here on assessment. We have met the governor, SUBEB Chairman and other education officials in the state. We are here on a visit to the school construction area. We need to see how much the government and SUBEB are eager to utilise the investment for the future education in the state.

“KOICA is supporting many countries in socio-economic development, promote digital performance and digital education in Nigeria. We also have interest in promoting ICT and digital education in Nigeria,” he added. Theguardianng

Why APC lost Zamfara, Bauchi, Imo, Oyo, others to PDP – Buhari’s aide, Ahmed

Ismael Ahmed, Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Social Investment Programmes, SIP, has spoken on Friday’s Supreme Court ruling in the intra-party case involving Zamfara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The judgement favoured People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidates in the state.

The Supreme Court nullified APC votes in the 2019 general elections in Zamfara, declaring that the party had no candidates.

The five-member panel of justice led by Justice Tanko Mohammed, the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), in a unanimous judgement, held that the APC failed to conduct primaries in accordance with the party’s rules.

In his reaction posted on Twitter, Ahmed gave reasons the APC lost in some states to the opposition PDP.

He tweeted: “We lost two States before going to polls – Zamfara and Rivers. We lost Imo and Adamawa bc (because) of ego.

“We lost Sokoto and Bauchi due to false confidence. We lost Oyo due to whatever it was we lost Oyo for. We have work to do in the build-up to the next round. Serious work!”

Meanwhile, there was wild jubilation by PDP members in Gusau metropolis as well as headquarters of the 14 Local Government Areas of the state following the judgement.
