Nigeria: Panel confirms release of child-bride convicted of killing husband

The Presidential Committee on Correctional Reforms and Decongestion which was inaugurated in 2017 has so far secured the release of 10,000 inmates across the country.

The panel also confirmed the release of Rahama Husseini, the child-bride who was convicted for killing her husband when she was14 years.

The Special Assistant on Media and Public Relations, Office of the Attorney General of the Federation, Dr Umar Gwandu, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.

The statement, which was meant to give update on the activities of the committee, was titled ‘Prison decongestion: 31 inmates released in Kano.’

Gwandu said the committee, which was inaugurated by the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, in 2017, had been focusing more on the reformation of juvenile justice.

He added, “Over 10,000 inmates have been released through the committee.

“In recent times the committee focused more attention on reformation of the juvenile justice.”

Gwandu added that the committee facilitated the release of no fewer than 31 inmates from the Nigerian Correctional Centre in Kano during its members’ visit to the centre over the weekend.

He added, “The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crimes brought to the attention of the chairman, Justice I. U Bello (retd.), the case of Rahama Husseini.

“In 2015, Rahama said to be 14 years at the time, was alleged to have been forcibly married off by her father and three days after, while her husband attempted to consummate the marriage, a struggle ensued which led to his unfortunate death.

“While granting state pardon to Rahma, Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje of Kano State promised that the state government will support her rehabilitation process.

“The inmate is said to have been in custody for almost seven years.
“Representatives of UNODC and Buni Yadi Foundation were also present to lend their voice and support to the release of Rahama.” Punchng
