Sultan Urges Muslims to Commence Fasting




The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III has declared today, Tuesday, April 13, 2020, the first day of the Holy Month of Ramadan.

He declared that the crescent moon was sighted in almost every part of the country earlier yesterday, Monday, which was the 29th day of the Month of Shaban and thereby signifying that today is the First day of Ramadan 1442.

Sultan Abubakar, however called on the entire Muslim communities in the country to start fast today in accordance with the teachings of Islam

This is coming as the President of the Senate, Dr. Ahmad Lawan, has urged the Muslim Ummah to stress messages of peace, love and national unity as the Holy Month of Ramadan begins across the Islamic world

The Sultan said the council got information of the moon sighting from many Islamic leaders across the country which he said signified the commencement of Ramadan fast.

He urged Muslims to use this month of Ramadan to pray against the spread of COVID-19 in the country and work in line with the directive of government and all other relevant stakeholders in the country.

He also called on the Muslims across the country to use the month of Ramadan to continue to pray for the leaders of the country and also against insecurity in the country.

He implored Islamic clerics and leaders to observe the laid down procedures of Covid-19 by maintaining social distance during the conventional prayers and other activities during the month.

Meanwhile, the President of the Senate, Dr. Ahmad Lawan, has urged the Muslim Ummah to stress messages of peace, love and national unity as the Holy Month of Ramadan begins across the Islamic world.

Lawan, in a statement issued yesterday urged them to remember the Holy Month as a period of fasting, sober reflection, self-discipline and sacrifice.

He said: “I urge us to remember our dear country in our prayers as we seek to overcome the challenges we are facing as a nation. This is in the realisation that Allah is the Almighty, kind and greater than all human problems.

“I enjoin us to stress the importance of peace, love, generosity and unity in our teachings during this sacred period.

“We should also not let down our guards in the observance of COVID-19 non-pharmaceutical protocols in our spiritual and other activities during the Holy Month”.
