In Nigeria: Groups allege plot to divert NDDC funds with EFCC

CONCERNED groups in the Niger Delta region have alleged a plot to divert revenues of the Niger Delta Development Commission presently in custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

The revenues running into millions of dollars were reportedly remitted by International Oil Companies to the EFCC for the past six months following directive by the Federal Government to stop remitting directly to NDDC until the ongoing investigation of the financial affairs of its Interim Management Committee was over.

At a joint press conference on Sunday in Warri, Delta State, the National Coordinator of Ijaw Interest Advocate otherwise called Izanzan camp, Arerebo Yerinmene and the Chairman Emeritus of Ijaw Youth Congress, Eastern Zone and National President of Patriotic Ijaw Youth Leaders, Sir Sammy Gorge, pointedly accused the anti-graft agency of alleged diversion of funds meant for the development of the Niger Delta region.

The groups called on the President, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), “to investigate the issue and stop the injustice being meted on the people of Niger Delta region”.

The groups declared, “We shall never, for any reason, allow anybody, for any reason whatsoever, to impoverish us further and any further attempt to loot the commonwealth of our people, we shall resort to occupying the streets of the Niger Delta.

“We shall resist every force against our development, even in the midst of persecution, relegation and oppression, as we have resolved to occupy the streets of the Niger Delta to disrupt the operation of the IOC’s and their facilities until such perceived broad daylight manoeuvring of funds is stopped.” (Punch)
