Many children living in traumatic situations, Lagos commissioner

The Lagos State Commissioner for Education, Mrs Folashade Adefisayo, has urged teachers in the state to relate with every child with patience and understanding, saying many pupils are victims of traumatic situations.

Adefisayo noted that problems people attributed to demons and supernatural forces were caused by the unhealthy environment around children.

She spoke on Saturday at the 2nd Annual Child Trauma and Mental Health Conference organised by a non-governmental organisation, Suburbancares Initiative.
The event, themed, ‘Critical factor for good mental health and teen suicide prevention,’ held at Greensprings School, Anthony Village in Lagos.

The founder of the NGO, Dr Bukola Ogunkua, said the programme, which was for teachers in Lagos State, was to help to detect the early symptoms of distress and trauma among children before such conditions degenerate into mental illness.

The commissioner, who delivered the keynote address on the grand finale of the training, said family background and social status did not matter in issues of trauma.

Adefisayo noted that pupils attending schools and working as housemaids were also exposed to trauma, including abuse, which could reduce their performance at school.
She urged teachers to contribute positively to every child that passed through them, adding that their impact could make a difference in the future of children. Punch
