6 million Nigerians benefiting from cash transfer - President’s aide

MORE than six million Nigerians are benefitting from the Conditional Cash Transfer introduced by the Federal Government, the Special Adviser to President Muhammed Buhari on Social Investment, Mrs. Maryam Uwais, said on Wednesday.

She said the beneficiaries are spread across 29 states, adding that her office has verified that saving groups among beneficiaries in 17 out of 20 states have saved over N567 million from the monthly stipends of N5,000.

According to her, more 18,210 of them have taken loans from the money saved and less than 1000 of them have defaulted.

“So, these women are working very hard to set up their own businesses, growing productive day by day,” Mrs. Uwais said, even as she lamented the shortfalls in budgetary releases for the SIPs.

She spoke while leading the management team of the National Social Investment Programme N-SIP to brief the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Hajiya Sadiya Umar Farouq and update her on the activities of the NSIPs in her office in Abuja.

Mrs. Uwais noted that the National Social Investment Office (NSIO) would continue to strive towards performing its responsibilities in line with the provisions of the Fiscal Responsibility Act.

A statement by the NSIO Communications Manager, Justice Tienabeso Bibiye, said the briefing was in line with the Presidential directive that the N-SIPs be moved to the newly created ministry.

The N-SIP was under the Office of the Vice President in the first four years of the Buhari administration.

He said that Mrs. Uwais briefed the minister on the structure, financial standing, level of implementation of the various components and challenges of the SIP of the administration.

According to her, the NSIO expenditure has strictly remained consistent with the financial work plan defended and approved by the National Assembly. (Thenationonlineng)
