ScarmAlert: The Rockford BBB says scammers are using your boss’ email to get money

The Better Business Bureau is sounding the alarm on Email Compromise Scams.

The Better Business Bureau wants you to be cautious when opening your next email from your boss.

Email Compromise Scams are on the rise and utilizing sources of authority to get your attention.

The scam is an email phishing scam that targets people who pay bills in business, government, and nonprofits.

The email appears to come from a boss and asks the receiver to wire money, buy gift cards, or send personal information.

Authorities say the scammers can even utilize your personal information to get funds without your knowledge.

“These scammers can go in with the proper information and get somebody’s IRS refund for example,” says Dave Kirlinkus, Winnebago Country Deputy State’s Attorney. “Or they can open bank accounts in other names.”

The BBB says American businesses lost more than $1 billion dollars last year due to scams like these. (Wrex)
