An eyewitness election observer who narrowly missed mob action has narrated how he escaped death and how he and his team were rescued by police and army.

The said mob action was allegedly responsible for the death of a man identified as Sunday Odo who was said to have been shot death at the home of Senator Ayogu Eze, the Enugu State gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in Umuonu-Umuida, Enugu-Ezike.

According to our findings, the deceased is said to be a younger brother to APC House of Assembly candidate in Igbo-Eze North, Okwy Odo.

Although, there were conflicting reports on the identity of the victim, while some say; he is a member of an election observer team, others said he is one of the supporters of the guber candidate.

Meanwhile, circumstances surrounding the shooting is still unclear but there are claims he was shot during a disagreement between the angry supporters of Senator Eze and the election observers.

The supporters are said to be aggrieved over the removal of his name from the final list published by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

After the shooting, the eyewitness narrated that the observer group were rescued by a combined team of the police and army.

“We were almost killed there; as we drove into Ayogu’s compound, the mob descended on us. They first threw a cap with Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi’s picture into our vehicle and branded us PDP supporters.

“They shot at one of us and he was reeling in a pool of his blood while the rest of us was held hostage until the police came to our rescue,” one of them claimed.

Meanwhile, a security source has confirmed that the victim was confirmed dead at the Bishop Shanahan Hospital, in Nsukka.

Spokesman of the Enugu Police Command, SP Ebere Amaraizu confirmed the killing.

He said in a terse statement that “we have commenced investigations into the alleged incident of killing at Ayogu Eze’s residence at Igbo-Eze North L.G.A.”
