Student dies, 18 police injured as student clash with police in Senegal
Following the demands by students of the payment of their grants, a student has been reportedly killed and 18 police injured in the clashes which took place at Saint-Louis, northern Senegal.
This was made known by the Senegalese interior minister, Ali Ngouye Ndiaye said that the fracas which happened in University of Saint-Louis, left, “20 wounded, including 18 gendarmes.”
He added that, “Unfortunately, a student died as a result of this incident.”
Meanwhile, student sources had it that, the student that was killed is a second-year student who was unfortunately shot dead.
However, the interior minister has said that, “We regret this incident,” adding that, “The (students’) claim was primarily a grants problem.”
The whole episode was reportedly motivated by the students lacking their grants, who wanted to “eat without paying the bill” in the university restaurants, which prompted the authorities to appeal to the police, he said.
The minister said he expected an inquiry to be held and promised that the grants would be paid.
Student demonstrations are common in Senegal but rarely result in deaths.
